CARICOM Launches New Regional Security Strategy Amid Rising Threats
The Caribbean Community’s (CARICOM) Implementation Agency for Crime and Security (IMPACS) has officially launched the development of a new CARICOM Security Strategy (CSS). The initiative began with a high-level virtual steering committee meeting held on April 24, 2025.
The new CSS aims to respond to an evolving geopolitical and geo-economic landscape, addressing modern security challenges including cybercrime, artificial intelligence, and public health threats. IMPACS says the strategy will modernize and strengthen both national and regional institutions, embedding a rights-based, resilient approach to security.
Trinidad and Tobago: UNC Wins General Elections, Ending PNM’s Decade-Long Reign
In a dramatic political shake-up, the United National Congress (UNC), led by Kamla Persad-Bissessar, has won the April 28 general election in Trinidad and Tobago, defeating the People’s National Movement (PNM) after ten years in office.
The UNC victory, fueled by a strong social media campaign and widespread public dissatisfaction, marks Persad-Bissessar’s return as Prime Minister. The new government will feature a blend of experienced incumbents and fresh faces, including coalition allies.
U.S.-Deported Venezuelans Held in El Salvador: Lawyer Denied Access
In El Salvador, human rights activist and attorney Kerry Kennedy, daughter of the late Robert F. Kennedy, has revealed that the Salvadoran government denied her access to ten Venezuelan men imprisoned under a U.S.-backed deportation agreement.
More than 250 Venezuelans have been deported from the U.S. to a maximum-security prison in El Salvador under an 18th-century wartime law. The U.S. claims the detainees are gang members, but families and legal representatives allege they were denied due process and are innocent.
