U.S. Imposes New Tariffs on Brazil
“U.S.–Brazil Trade Spat Escalates”
U.S. President Donald Trump has announced a 50% tariff on all imports from Brazil, following a diplomatic fallout with Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who earlier this week referred to Trump as “an unwanted emperor.”
In a letter justifying the move, President Trump cited Brazil’s alleged “insidious attacks” on free elections and American free speech, linking it to the ongoing trial of former Brazilian leader Jair Bolsonaro, who stands accused of plotting a coup to prevent Lula from taking office in 2023.
In response, President Lula convened an emergency meeting with his vice president, finance minister, and top advisors in Brasília. He fired back in a public post, denouncing the U.S. trade claims as false, and emphasized that the U.S. actually runs a trade surplus with Brazil.
