Pregnant Woman Shot Dead, Boyfriend Target Escapes

We begin tonight in Trinidad and Tobago, where police are investigating the fatal shooting of a Venezuelan national in Arouca.

The woman, who was reportedly seven months pregnant, was shot and killed on Wednesday afternoon. Police said the victim and her boyfriend were seated under a shed along Garden Road when a gunman opened fire at approximately 1:00 p.m.

The woman was struck by gunfire and later pronounced dead at the Arima Hospital. Investigators believe her boyfriend was the intended target of the attack. He escaped unharmed.

Police are continuing investigations into the incident.

UPP Defends St. George Primary Rules Amid Low Turnout

Over in Antigua and Barbuda, the United Progressive Party (UPP) has defended the conduct of Mondayโ€™s St. George primary election, insisting that long-standing constitutional rules โ€” not voter apathy โ€” explain the low turnout.

Party officials said voting eligibility was limited to registered branch members who were financially up to date at least 14 days prior to the primary, a requirement they say was clearly communicated in advance.

Kelton Dalso, who emerged victorious in the contest, addressed concerns during a radio interview, rejecting claims that the process was mishandled.

Dalso secured nine votes, while Kem Riley and Jermaine Kentish each received two. Public discussion has since centred on the small number of ballots cast.

Dalso said efforts to revitalise the St. George branch began as early as September last year.

โ€œFrom September, we were trying to revitalise the branch and put an executive in place. We have about 46 or 47 persons in the group chat, and weโ€™ve been urging people to come out because we are trying to rebuild the branch,โ€ he explained.

He added that the voting process was governed by constitutional provisions beyond his control.

โ€œI do not control the constitutional and administrative provisions or procedural matters that govern the primary,โ€ Dalso said.

US President Says โ€˜Frameworkโ€™ Reached for Greenland Deal

And finally, in international news, United States President Donald Trump says the โ€œframeworkโ€ of a future deal involving Greenland has been reached.

Trump made the comments following a meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte at the World Economic Forum in Switzerland. He also said the United States will not impose tariffs on its European allies.

The World Economic Forum agenda has been partly overshadowed by Trumpโ€™s recent foreign policy statements, including his assertion that the United States should take control of Greenland โ€œthe easy way or the hard way.โ€

French President Emmanuel Macron responded on Tuesday, stating that France prefers โ€œrespect to bulliesโ€ and rejecting what he described as unacceptable tariff threats in response to Trumpโ€™s comments.
