HGP Nightly News – A 27-year-old hairdresser from Islington Village, East Bank Berbice, is now recovering in hospital after she was reportedly shot by her ex-boyfriend on Saturday afternoon, in an incident that police in Region Six are now investigating. The matter has shocked the community and drawn attention to yet another case of alleged violence involving former intimate partners.
The injured woman has been identified as Vasanti Gordon, a well-known hairdresser and the owner of Kylie’s Makeup Studio and Spa, which operates from her home. Police said the incident occurred at about 16:50 hrs on Saturday at Gordon’s residence, and investigations are ongoing into an alleged offence of discharging a loaded firearm with intent.
According to police, the suspected shooter is a 28-year-old man from Fort Ordinance Housing Scheme, East Canje, Berbice, who reportedly shared a relationship with Gordon but had recently separated from her. Preliminary investigations indicate that the mother of two told investigators the man approached her while she was seated in her motor car.
Police said Gordon reported that the suspect was armed with a handgun and allegedly fired several rounds at her before also dealing her a blow to the head. The circumstances surrounding the confrontation are still being examined as investigators work to determine exactly what unfolded at the scene.
Gordon was taken to the New Amsterdam Regional Hospital, where she was admitted with suspected gunshot injuries to her right leg and thigh. Her condition has been listed as stable. The investigation remains ongoing as police continue to probe the alleged shooting and the events leading up to it.
