HGP Nightly News – After a long stretch of public anticipation, the Bureau of Statistics released its preliminary 2022 national census report this afternoon, just hours after the findings were presented to the President. The document provides the first official snapshot of how Guyana’s population has shifted since the last census in 2012.According to the report, Guyana recorded population growth of just over 17.6% in 2022 compared with 2012.
The population stood at 878,674 in 2022, an increase of 131,719 people over the 2012 figure. The Bureau has also projected continued growth beyond the census year, estimating the population reached 956,044 by the end of 2024.Region Four, home to Georgetown, remains the country’s most populated region, with 347,759 residents recorded there in 2022.
The census found that every region grew over the decade, but the rankings shifted: Region Three has now overtaken Region Six as the second most populated region. The report also notes that Region Eight continues to record the smallest increase in population growth.Beyond population totals, the census points to rising household numbers.
The report recorded 271,946 households in 2022, with the average household size now a little over three people. Another notable finding is the gender split: the census states there are more males than females in the population. In 2022, Guyana’s population comprised 440,882 males and 437,792 females.
