PROVIDENCE, EAST BANK DEMERARA — After a 12-year hiatus, the iconic Guyana Festival is set to make a massive return as a centerpiece of the nation’s 60th Independence Diamond Jubilee. Minister of Tourism, Industry, and Commerce, Susan Rodrigues, officially unveiled the details during a press conference at the Guyana National Stadium on Thursday, promising an immersive celebration of the Guyanese identity from May 15–17, 2026.
Under the reimagined theme “Sound, Soul, and Taste,” the three-day extravaganza at the National Stadium aims to unite locals, the diaspora, and international visitors in a vibrant showcase of the country’s diverse heritage.
A Bold Expression of Identity
Minister Rodrigues described the 2026 festival as more than just an event; it is a “bold expression” of Guyana’s journey over the last six decades.
- Heritage Villages: The stadium will be transformed into various Cultural Zones featuring live demonstrations of traditional arts, including African head wrapping, Tibisiri craft, Sari and Dhoti wrapping, and pottery.
- Entertainment: The nightly schedule includes a “Night of Legends,” the “One Guyana Concert,” and a National Cookout Competition where participants can win cash prizes and local tour experiences.
- The Cultural Zone: Attendees can expect a deep dive into the traditions of Guyana’s six ethnic groups through storytelling, drama, comedy, and movie screenings.
The “Taste of Guyana” Culinary Village
A major highlight of the festival will be the Culinary Village, which the Minister noted will offer authentic dishes representing the “six peoples” of Guyana.
- Authentic Flavors: From traditional indigenous pepperpot to East Indian curries and African metemgee, the village is designed to be a gastronomic map of the country.
- National Cookout: Amateur and professional chefs will go head-to-head in a massive cook-off, judged by local culinary experts.
Prizes and the Return of the “Festival Passport”
In a move to encourage full participation over the weekend, the Guyana Festival Passport returns at $5,000.
- Access & Discounts: The passport grants entry to all three days and offers exclusive discounts on tours and accommodations through festival partners.
- The Grand Prize: Passport holders will be entered into a daily gate prize drawing, with the grand prize a 2026 BYD Yuan Pro valued at $5.5 million.
- Sponsor Giveaways: Other prizes include six Caribbean Airlines return tickets, smartphones from ENet, LED Google Televisions from Courts, and jewelry discounts from King’s Jewelry World.
A Family-Friendly Journey
The Minister concluded by acknowledging the “robust support” of corporate sponsors who have made the festival’s return possible. As part of the wider Diamond Jubilee celebrations, Guyana Festival 2026 is positioned as a landmark event that honors the past while showcasing the modern, vibrant spirit of a nation at 60. Minister Rodrigues encouraged every Guyanese to “make every effort” to be a part of this historic immersion into the nation’s sound, soul, and taste.
