GEORGETOWN, GUYANA – The Guyana Online Academy of Learning (GOAL) is charting a new course in the medical field through an international partnership with Medvarsity, a leading medical university based in India. The collaboration, launched on Tuesday, is expected to significantly enhance Guyana’s healthcare workforce and expand opportunities for local medical professionals.

Speaking at the official launch, Minister of Health Dr. Frank Anthony revealed that 165 students have already been enrolled in the inaugural batch, participating in over 330 medical-related courses.

“That’s amazing for the first time we’re starting this,” Dr. Anthony noted. “We already have a significant number of healthcare professionals taking part, and many of them are women and nurses.”

Dr. Anthony emphasized the timeliness of the training, pointing to the six new hospitals scheduled to open across the country by August 2025. He said the program will ensure that Guyana has a qualified pool of medical personnel ready to staff these new facilities.

“The training will be of utmost importance to ensure we have well-trained individuals to manage these hospital units,” he added.

Professor Jacob Opadeyi, Director of GOAL, explained that students will participate in a two-module learning system. Once participants complete the first module, they can proceed to the second without reapplying.

Meanwhile, Mayurakshi Acharya, Vice President of Medvarsity, emphasized that the partnership is designed not only to uplift professional standards but also to improve overall patient care across Guyana.

“This collaboration will elevate both healthcare outcomes for professionals and the quality of medical services provided to the public,” she said.

This partnership underscores Guyana’s broader strategy to digitally transform and upskill its workforce while building resilient healthcare systems through education.
