FINAL SECTION OF AUBREY BARKER ROAD PROJECT IN LAST STAGE

Works on the Aubrey Barker Road project are nearing completion, with the final phase expected to be finished by the end of the month, according to Minister of Public Works Juan Edghill.

The minister disclosed that the remaining segment, identified as Lot 26, is now in its final stages. This section is a critical component of the overall project, as it will link Aubrey Barker Road to Ogle, significantly improving connectivity and easing traffic movement for residents and commuters along the Mandela Avenue to Ugleg/ Ogle corridor.

During a recent site inspection, Minister Edghill explained that progress on this stretch was delayed due to several challenges, including the removal of structures, the relocation of residents, and technical issues involving Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI).

He noted that 19 residents were relocated to facilitate construction, with most still finalising their settlement arrangements. While some occupants remain along the roadway, they have been set back to allow construction to continue without obstruction.

A major challenge, the minister said, was a GWI transmission line that previously ran directly along the centre of the roadway. The pipeline has since been relocated to the shoulders of the road at a depth designed to preserve the structural integrity of the carriageway. One remaining chamber at the corner of the roadway is still to be constructed, after which all outstanding GWI-related issues are expected to be fully resolved.

Minister Edghill said the ministry is targeting completion by the end of January, acknowledging that while the project missed its initial Christmas deadline, steady progress is now being made despite seasonal challenges. He expressed satisfaction with the level of cooperation shown by residents and road users, particularly those directly affected by the works.

In addition, the minister announced plans to collaborate with the Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development to rehabilitate the historic market in the area. Planned works include painting and repairing internal walkways, which he described as being in poor condition.

He also revealed that a tarmac surface will be constructed at a location currently used as a stockpile area. This space is intended to accommodate vendors who were displaced during the construction period, providing them with improved facilities once the project is completed.

With the final section nearing completion, the Aubrey Barker Road project is expected to significantly enhance traffic flow and connectivity between key areas of Georgetown and its environs, marking a major improvement to the city’s transport infrastructure.
