DR KIRTON CALLS FOR BIPARTISAN APPROACH ON THE VENEZUELAN ISSUE

An international relations specialist has warned that recent developments in Venezuela, including the removal of its president by the United States and a continued military buildup in the region, could have far-reaching economic and social consequences for Guyana and the wider Caribbean.

Dr. Mark Kirton, Director of the Centre for International Border Studies, said the unfolding situation risks becoming a protracted conflict, with serious implications for trade, tourism, and the movement of people across the region.

Speaking during a weekend programme, Dr. Kirton noted that early signs of disruption are already emerging, including reports of flight cancellations, which he said could intensify if tensions between the United States and Venezuela are not resolved swiftly.

He cautioned that instability in Venezuela — a country of approximately 30 million people — could significantly affect Guyana, particularly through increased migration pressures. According to Dr. Kirton, irregular migration is already a challenge for Guyana, and a further surge could strain the country’s health, social services, and public infrastructure.

The former diplomat stressed that the issue transcends party politics and requires a unified national response. He is calling on the government to adopt what he described as a “whole-of-country approach,” engaging all stakeholders to ensure preparedness, coordination, and clear communication.

“This is a national issue,” Dr. Kirton argued, adding that citizens must be protected from misinformation and uncertainty as the regional situation evolves.

He further warned that Guyana faces serious current and potential challenges arising from geopolitical tensions and urged political leaders, civil society, and key institutions to work together in a bipartisan, multi-sectoral manner.

Dr. Kirton concluded that only an inclusive, coordinated national strategy can help safeguard Guyana’s stability and economic resilience amid the rapidly changing regional landscape.
