Former GTU President Conwin King Sentenced to 19 Years for Raping Six-Year-Old

Former President of the Guyana Teachers’ Union (GTU), Colwin King, has been sentenced to 19 years in prison for raping a six-year-old girl in April 2021. The sentence was handed down on Thursday by Justice Simone Morris-Ramlall at the Demerara High Court.
Last month, a jury returned a unanimous guilty verdict on two counts of rape of a child under 16, with the offenses reportedly occurring on two separate occasions — one at night and another in the afternoon — when the child was alone.
King, who legal counsel represented during the trial, was prosecuted by State Counsel Montas Ali and Geneva Wills.
This is not King’s first time facing such allegations. In 2009, he was charged with the rape of another child at a hotel in Princess Street, Georgetown, and was released on $100,000 bail. The case proceeded to the High Court in 2011 but was resolved in 2016 when a jury acquitted him of the charge.
Following the 2021 allegations, King resigned from his position as GTU President and also stepped down as administrator of the Guyana Industrial Training Centre.
The case has reignited calls for stronger measures to protect children and ensure that those in positions of authority are held accountable.
