HGP Nightly News – Police are hunting for the person responsible for a brutal early morning attack at Zeelugt, East Bank Essequibo, which left a seven-year-old boy dead and his elderly great-aunt hospitalised with a stab wound to her neck.
Dead is Adriel Aftab Mohamed, a student of Zeelugt Primary School.
His 72-year-old great-aunt, Alima Itwari, survived the attack and remains a patient at the De Kinderen Regional Hospital, where she is listed in stable condition.
According to police, the child was found shortly after 5:00 a.m. on Friday lying motionless in a pool of blood inside the family’s home. Itwari was discovered nearby, bleeding from a wound to the neck.
The discovery was reportedly made after a pastor received a telephone call informing him that screams had been heard coming from his mother’s residence.
He rushed to the house and found the gate secured. After removing the latch and entering the darkened building, he switched on the lights and came upon the horrific scene.
His mother was lying in blood beside her bed but was still conscious. Nearby, his young nephew was found motionless.
The pastor immediately took his injured mother to the De Kinderen Regional Hospital for medical attention.
Investigators later processed the scene and recovered a bloodstained kitchen knife from a bed inside the house. Several blood-stained footprints were also found in one of the bedrooms.
While receiving treatment, Itwari reportedly told investigators that she was asleep when she felt an object pressed against her neck.
When she opened her eyes, she allegedly saw a tall, thin person who then stabbed her.
Police have since questioned several persons in the area and are reviewing CCTV footage from nearby properties as they intensify efforts to identify the suspect.
The motive for the attack remains unclear.
The killing of the young child has left the Zeelugt community in shock, as investigators continue working to determine who entered the home and carried out the deadly attack.
