Firmly rooted in the belief that “Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts,” Attorney Anastasia Sanford-Fredericks embodies resilience, courage, and determination within the legal profession.
With nearly a decade of experience, this devoted wife and mother reflects on a remarkable journey—from the vibrant world of dance to a distinguished career in law.
Born and raised on Durban Street, Wortmanville, Sanford-Fredericks is a proud product of her community and a beacon of hope for young people facing socio-economic challenges. Her life story stands as living proof that belief in oneself, paired with unwavering faith, can pave the way to achieving one’s dreams.
Throughout her journey, she encountered numerous obstacles, transforming setbacks into stepping stones.
“I have been a dancer my entire life, and law was never what I had in mind. Law chose me—I did not choose law,” she shared candidly.
As a child, Sanford-Fredericks was actively involved with the National School of Dance, performing in cultural events and competitions that instilled discipline, creativity, and confidence. Her early dance career opened doors to diverse opportunities, including regional travel across the Caribbean, exposing her to different cultures and broadening her worldview. This dynamic background would later enrich her perspective beyond the stage.
From Entertainment to Law
Despite being the daughter of accomplished attorney Gem Sanford-Johnson, Sanford-Fredericks initially viewed law as a distant possibility. Her turning point came while assisting her mother—then a legal secretary—with estate and probate matters. Witnessing the transformative power of legal advocacy ignited a passion she had never anticipated.
Recalling words from mentor Joseph Eleazar, she shared:
“He would say, ‘Why don’t you stop with all the vulgarity? You love the law.’”
His encouragement pushed her to engage more deeply with legal texts and casework, helping her recognise her natural inclination toward the profession.
Her path, however, was far from linear. Following a life-altering accident, she experienced a profound awakening that ultimately propelled her toward legal education. With the encouragement of her sisters, she enrolled at the Institute of Distance and Continuing Education, laying the foundation for her future.
She later pursued a Bachelor’s degree in Law at the University of Guyana, where she achieved strong academic results while balancing the demands of motherhood. This was followed by a Legal Education Certificate from the prestigious Hugh Wooding Law School, where she further refined her legal skills.
Though surrounded by younger classmates, Sanford-Fredericks built strong, respectful relationships. Her first year was challenging—failing four out of five courses—but her resilience never wavered. In a powerful show of solidarity, her classmates rallied around her and later appointed her Class Representative for the Law Faculty.
A Miraculous Entry into Hugh Wooding Law School
With a GPA of 2.9, Sanford-Fredericks doubted her chances of securing a spot among the Top 25 at Hugh Wooding, particularly as many peers held GPAs above 3.5. The pressure was immense, and self-doubt set in.
Yet, bolstered by her mother’s unwavering encouragement, she experienced a moment of emotional triumph upon learning of her acceptance into the esteemed institution.
She credits much of her success at law school to the strong camaraderie and discipline shared with her roommates, who formed a vital support system throughout her studies.
Today, she continues to emphasise the importance of collaboration in the legal profession:
“In law, you are learning every day—you never know everything. Sometimes you must reach out to a colleague for clarity. You cannot exist alone in this profession.”
A Message of Empowerment
Sanford-Fredericks’s journey serves as a powerful reminder that one’s background does not define one’s potential. She passionately encourages young people—especially those from underprivileged communities—to recognise their worth and walk with pride, regardless of circumstance.
Specialising in Real Estate, Conveyancing, Probate and Administration, Civil Law, Prescriptive Title, Mortgages, and Family Law, she has built a stellar reputation grounded in legal excellence, professionalism, and compassion.
Beyond private practice, she is committed to nurturing future legal minds through guest lectures at institutions such as Bishop’s High School and St. Stanislaus College. Through mentorship and education, she continues to inspire the next generation with the same belief that shaped her own path.
In recognition of her impact, Attorney Anastasia Sanford-Fredericks was honoured as one of Guyana’s 25 Most Influential Women Leaders on June 10, 2023, and received a Certificate of Merit from the Westchester County Board of Legislators, New York.
