APNU CANDIDATE PROMISES TO END “CLIQUE” CONTROL OF BUSINESS OPPORTUNITIES

GEORGETOWN – An A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) government would break the hold of what it calls a “small clique” over business opportunities and open the playing field for all Guyanese, party candidate Dr. Terrence Campbell told supporters on Friday night.

Speaking to an audience gathered at Stabroek Market Square, Dr. Campbell said an Aubrey Norton presidency would put an end to the alleged pattern of contracts and business deals going to select private sector interests.

“We are committed to levelling the playing field in the private sector,” he declared, pledging that towns like Linden, Essequibo, and New Amsterdam would be “restored to their former glory.”

He promised a Guyana where, in his words, “No more will there be inequality. We will allow the wealth of this country — wealth that belongs to you — to be spread to you.”

The rally drew a smaller turnout than some past APNU gatherings in the party’s Georgetown stronghold, but Campbell’s speech sought to energize the faithful ahead of the September 1 general and regional elections.

The APNU candidate said a Norton-led administration would make heavy investments in technical institutes and the Port Mourant Training Centre to prepare Guyanese for the demands of the oil and gas industry.

“Fabrication for the oil industry would not only be done here in Georgetown,” he said, “but across the country by competent technicians.”Criticizing what he described as “gutter contracts” for small-scale drain cleaning, Campbell vowed that APNU would award “proper contracts” that allow contractors to support their families and build sustainable livelihoods.

The pledges echo campaign promises made in previous elections, when various political parties vowed to decentralize economic opportunities and broaden access to government contracts — commitments that have often been difficult to fully deliver once in office.
