HGP Nightly News – Guyana has recorded 74 road deaths from 68 fatal crashes so far this year, as police continue to warn that speeding and dangerous driving are putting lives at risk.
The warning comes as the Guyana Police Force Traffic Department recorded 2,293 traffic violations between August 23 and 29, including 601 cases of speeding.
Police said fatal crashes recorded during the period were linked to speeding, dangerous driving and vehicles crossing the path of moving traffic.
The latest figures add to growing concerns over road safety, with authorities previously identifying speeding as a leading contributor to fatal accidents.
Among the other violations recorded last week were 137 cases of vehicles being left in dangerous positions, 115 motorists failing to wear safety helmets and 74 breaches of prescribed fitness conditions.
Police also recorded 59 seatbelt violations, 41 cases of driving under the influence and another 41 cases of driving without a licence.
The Traffic Department said too many excuses continue to be made over road safety and stressed that enforcement alone cannot stop the loss of life.
Police are also combining enforcement with education, conducting road-safety lectures and outreach activities at 30 locations across the country.
The sessions targeted motorists, businesses, bars and other road users as authorities seek to change driving behaviour and reduce the number of fatal crashes.
