WIN MPs TO PROVIDE FORENSIC SCRUTINY OF GOV’T RECORD $1.5 TRILLION BUDGET

HGP Nightly News – The National Assembly commences debate on the 2026 National Budget today, with the parliamentary opposition party, We Invest in Nationhood (WIN), preparing to deliver its first substantive analysis of the government’s proposed $1.558 trillion fiscal package.

The debates represent a significant moment for the relatively new parliamentary group, which has indicated its approach will center on detailed, evidence-based examination of expenditure allocations, policy direction, and projected outcomes.

The People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) government’s budget, the largest in the nation’s history, has been framed by the administration as essential for continued national development. However, WIN has signaled it will press for greater focus on social equity and the tangible needs of citizens.

“The upcoming debates are a fundamental exercise in parliamentary oversight,” a WIN spokesperson stated. “Our contributions will be measured, rigorous, and rooted in the principles of accountable governance and equitable resource distribution.”

The party’s opening arguments will be presented by several key Shadow Ministers. Dr. Andre Lewis (Natural Resources) is expected to address sectors central to national revenue. Natasha Singh (Human Services and Social Security) will focus on social protection frameworks, while Dr. Gordon Barker (Education) and Deon La Cruz (Amerindian Affairs) are slated to speak to investments in human capital and inclusive development, respectively.

Political observers note that these sessions will provide a clear indication of WIN’s policy priorities and its methodology as the primary opposition. The party has encouraged public engagement with the process, underscoring the budget’s profound implications for national planning and service delivery.

“The allocation of public resources is the most concrete expression of a government’s priorities,” the WIN spokesperson added. “We take our responsibility to scrutinize this document with the utmost seriousness, on behalf of all Guyanese.” The budget debates are scheduled to continue over the coming days.
