ECCLES, EAST BANK DEMERARA — The East Bank corridor’s rapid transformation received another boost on Tuesday as Minister of Local Government and Regional Development, Priya Manickchand, officially turned the sod for a new $40 million Neighbourhood Democratic Council (NDC) office for the Eccles/Ramsburg district.

The project marks the end of an era for the council, which had been operating out of a dilapidated structure that frequently hindered administrative efficiency. The new, modern facility is designed to serve as a central hub for the growing population along one of Guyana’s most critical developmental stretches.

A Four-Month Sprint to Completion

Recognizing the urgent need for a functional administrative space, Minister Manickchand announced an ambitious timeline for the project.

  • Completion Goal: The new office is expected to be fully constructed and operational within four months.
  • Staff Welfare: A primary driver for the new building is the improvement of working conditions for NDC staff, who previously faced significant safety and logistical challenges in the old structure.
  • Community Access: The design prioritizes accessibility, ensuring that residents of Eccles, Ramsburg, and surrounding schemes can engage with local government in a safe and efficient environment.

Strengthening the “Backbone” of Governance

During the ceremony, Minister Manickchand emphasized that local democratic organs are the “front line” of service delivery.

  • Modernization Drive: This $40 million investment is part of a broader national push by the Ministry to modernize infrastructure across all NDCs in Guyana.
  • Service Delivery: The new office will feature dedicated spaces for community engagement, allowing for better management of rates and taxes, building permits, and localized environmental issues.
  • Commitment to Growth: “We are ensuring that as our population grows, our institutions grow with them,” the Minister noted, highlighting the massive residential expansion currently underway on the East Bank.
