PRESIDENT ALI REITERATES GUYANA’S SUPPORT FOR REGIONAL FIGHT AGAINST TRANSNATIONAL CRIME

Guyana has reaffirmed its strong commitment to combating transnational crime, with President Irfaan Ali underscoring the importance of coordinated regional and international action to dismantle criminal networks operating across borders.

Speaking on Tuesday, President Ali said Guyana remains fully supportive of efforts to eradicate drug trafficking, gold smuggling, terrorism and other illicit activities that threaten regional stability. He noted that concerns about the growing sophistication of transnational criminal networks have been a recurring issue raised by regional leaders during several Caribbean Community (CARICOM) meetings.

According to the Head of State, criminal groups continue to exploit both maritime routes and regional airspace, posing serious challenges to law enforcement agencies and undermining national and regional security. He stressed that these activities extend beyond criminality, undermining democratic governance and social stability.

President Ali emphasized that transnational crime fuels corruption, weakens democratic institutions, erodes freedoms, and inflicts long-term damage on societies. As a result, he said governments must work collectively and decisively to confront these threats.

The President further highlighted Guyana’s close collaboration with international partners, particularly the United States, in addressing drug trafficking and smuggling. He said such partnerships are essential to strengthening intelligence-sharing, enforcement capacity, and regional security frameworks.

Ali reiterated that Guyana is a reliable and committed partner in the global fight against transnational crime and will continue to support initiatives aimed at protecting democratic institutions, safeguarding borders and promoting regional security.
