HGP Nightly News – The Mayor of Mabaruma is facing a mounting stack of legal troubles, leaving residents of the Region One township questioning the leadership of their top municipal official.
Trevi Leung has been charged by police in connection with several alleged offences over the past three weeks. The cases span allegations of violence, sexual assault, and impaired driving, each now before the court.
Three weeks ago, Leung was first charged in relation to two separate incidents. One involves the alleged assault of a male resident. The other concerns the alleged sexual assault of a woman. The Mayor has been granted bail in both matters as proceedings continue.
Then, on March 2, 2026, he was charged again. Police reportedly found that his breath alcohol level exceeded the legal limit while he was behind the wheel.
During his court appearance on the DUI charge, the presiding magistrate took the unusual step of recusing himself, citing a desire to avoid any perception of influence. The file has been sent to the Chief Magistrate for reassignment to another court.
The legal developments have sent ripples through the small township. Residents and business operators are watching closely, with many expressing concern about what the charges mean for local leadership.
At the Kumaka Market and nearby commercial areas, vendors have voiced frustration, saying stronger engagement from municipal leadership is needed to address pressing community and economic concerns. Instead, attention has been consumed by the Mayor’s legal battles.
Some members of the community are now calling for greater accountability and transparency. They want assurance that the interests of residents and businesses in Mabaruma are being represented, even as the person elected to lead them fights multiple allegations in court.
