Caribbean Braces for Heat, Haiti Faces Rights Crisis, Egypt Denounces Gaza Famine War

By Antonio Day | HGP Nightly News

Caribbean Heat and Rainfall Extremes Forecast for Coming Months

Bridgetown, Barbados – The Barbados-based Caribbean Climate Outlook Forum (CariCOF) has issued a stark warning about extreme humid heat and flooding risks across the region as El Niño-neutral conditions prevail over the next three months.

According to the latest Caribbean Climate Outlooks bulletin, the peak of the Caribbean heat season in August and September could bring heatwaves, heavy rainfall, flash floods, and increased hurricane activity.

The forecast highlights that while the 2025 heat season will likely be intense, it is not expected to match the severity of 2023 and 2024. Still, vulnerable nations including Barbados, the Windward Islands, Guyana, and the ABC Islands (Aruba, Bonaire, Curaçao) are being advised to brace for hazardous conditions, especially through September and October.

CariCOF notes that this period also marks a transition out of the wet and hurricane season into the cooler dry season in December and January.

Human Rights Situation in Haiti Remains Dire – UN

Port-au-Prince, Haiti – The United Nations Integrated Office in Haiti has described the human rights situation in the country as “extremely worrying,” as gang violence and abuse continue to escalate.

During the second quarter of 2025, the UN reported:

  • Over 24% of those killed or injured were victims of criminal groups.
  • 64% died during security force operations, many involving explosive drone strikes.
  • Incidents of gang rape, kidnapping, sexual slavery, and child trafficking remain widespread.

Despite the collapse of Haiti’s judicial system, the UN says it is supporting national efforts to combat impunity and enforce accountability. Observers warn that unless progress is made in dismantling criminal control zones, civilians will continue to suffer disproportionately.

Egypt Condemns War in Gaza as ‘Starvation and Annihilation’

Cairo, Egypt – In a powerful rebuke of the ongoing war in Gaza, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi declared that the conflict has moved beyond diplomacy, calling it a war of “starvation, annihilation, and elimination of the Palestinian cause.”

Speaking alongside the Vietnamese president, El-Sisi said history would judge those who remained silent in the face of Gaza’s suffering. He reiterated that Egypt would not allow the displacement of Palestinians through its borders.

While over 5,000 aid trucks are waiting in Egypt to enter Gaza, humanitarian agencies say Israel’s restricted entry of aid is pushing the region toward famine. Recent reports indicate:

  • 82 adults have died from hunger in Gaza in the last 5 weeks.
  • 93 children have also reportedly died due to malnutrition and starvation tactics.

“Starvation is one of the most undignified and barbaric ways to kill,” said Dr. James Smith, an emergency physician who volunteered in Gaza. “It is intentional, protracted, and designed to maximize suffering.”
