GUYANA CHAIRS HIGH-STAKES U.N MEETING ON MIDDLE EAST CRISIS

U.S. Bombing of Iran’s Nuclear Sites Sparks Global Alarm as UN Calls for De-escalation

UNITED NATIONS – The U.S. airstrike targeting Iran’s nuclear facilities has sparked intense global condemnation, raising fears of a broader Middle East conflict. In an emergency UN Security Council meeting chaired by Guyana’s Permanent Representative Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett, world leaders called for restraint and urgent diplomacy.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres cautioned that the region was “at risk of falling into a dangerous cycle of retaliation.”

“The people of the region cannot endure another cycle of destruction… We now risk descending into a red hole of retaliation after retaliation,” Guterres warned.

Ambassador Rodrigues-Birkett, leading the council under Guyana’s rotating presidency, emphasized the need for calm.

“We call on influential states to encourage the parties in this direction and resist the temptation to fan the flames of conflict,” she said, noting the grave humanitarian and security implications if tensions continue to rise.

Iran and Israel Trade Warnings

Iran’s UN Ambassador Amir Saeid Iravani made clear that Tehran will retaliate, stating:

“We will take all measures deemed necessary at our disposal to protect our people. The timing, nature, and scale of Iran’s proportionate response will be decided by its armed forces.”

Israel’s UN Ambassador Danny Danon applauded the U.S. strike, stating that Israel will continue military action until Iran’s nuclear capability is dismantled.

“Thank you to the United States for removing the greatest threat to global security… Thank you, President Trump, for acting when so many hesitated,” Danon said.

Washington Defends Its Position

U.S. Acting Representative to the UN, Ambassador Dori Shirey, defended the strike as necessary:

“This council must call upon the Iranian regime to end its 47-year effort to eradicate the State of Israel… to terminate its drive for nuclear weapons… and to negotiate peace in good faith,” she declared.

A Call for De-escalation

The Security Council session concluded without a resolution, but with an urgent call for de-escalation, humanitarian protection, and respect for international law. As the Middle East braces for potential retaliatory strikes, observers fear a broader war is imminent unless diplomacy prevails.
