HGP Nightly News – A tragic industrial incident aboard a cargo vessel at the Cummingsburg wharf has resulted in the deaths of four crew members, following suspected exposure to noxious fumes within the ship’s engine room on Wednesday evening.
According to a police report, the incident occurred around 6:00 PM on February 4, 2026. The crew members were reportedly conducting a routine inspection in the lower-section engine room when they were overcome by suspected toxic fumes.
Preliminary information indicates a chain of events where crew members Brandon Deonarine and Nerwaine Persaud entered the engine room first and collapsed. In subsequent attempts to assist their colleagues, Dominic Alexis and Getindra Sanchara also entered the confined space and succumbed.
Emergency response teams from the Guyana Fire Service and Emergency Medical Technicians were dispatched to the scene. The four men were extracted from the vessel and transported to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation, where they were pronounced dead on arrival.
Police processed the initial scene but were unable to immediately enter the engine room itself, pending a safety clearance to ensure the environment was no longer hazardous. Initial examinations found no visible marks of violence on the bodies, and authorities have stated no foul play is suspected at this preliminary stage.
A multi-agency investigation involving the Guyana Police Force and other relevant authorities remains ongoing to determine the precise cause of the fatal exposure and the origin of the suspected fumes.
