FIRE CHIEF WICKHAM REVEALS REMARKABLE TURNAROUND FOR DEPARTMENT; CALLS DOWN BY 34%

“The Tide Has Turned”: Fire Chief Reports 34% Drop in Emergency Calls Amid National Safety Push

GEORGETOWN, GUYANA — In a week marked by the devastating loss of a 57-room apartment complex in Alberttown, the Guyana Fire Service (GFS) has provided a surprisingly optimistic outlook on the nation’s fire safety. Speaking at the opening of the Annual Officers’ Conference on Wednesday, April 1, 2026, Fire Chief (ag) Gregory Wickham revealed that total recorded emergency calls across the country have plummeted by a remarkable 34% over the past year.

Under the theme “Fire Reduction through Technological Innovation and Enhanced Community Engagement,” Wickham argued that the days of the service being “crushed” under the weight of constant alarms are beginning to fade.

Containment at Alberttown: A “Real Catastrophe” Averted

While the fire at Fifth and Cummings Streets on Tuesday evening resulted in a total loss of the primary structure, the Fire Chief used the incident as an example of improved operational efficiency.

  • Massive Response: Five water tenders were deployed to the Alberttown scene simultaneously.
  • The Result: Firefighters successfully contained the inferno to a single building, preventing what Wickham described as a “real catastrophe” in the densely packed wooden neighborhood.
  • Impact of Support: The Chief credited the government’s recent investment in new equipment and tenders for allowing the GFS to positively impact citizens during such high-stakes events.

Changing Behavior: Citizens as “First Responders”

Perhaps the most vivid sign of progress, according to Wickham, is how the Guyanese public is reacting to fire. In several recent instances, firefighters have arrived at scenes only to find that residents had already extinguished the blaze themselves.

  • Education Success: Wickham pointed to these “citizen-led” saves as proof that the GFS’s public education campaign is genuinely changing behavior on the ground.
  • Proactive Safety: The service is moving beyond just responding to distress calls, focusing instead on “touching the lives” of business owners and residents with prevention techniques before a fire starts.

The Future: Technology and Fitness for Purpose

Looking ahead to the rest of 2026, the GFS is committed to a “sharp and fit-for-purpose” model.

  • New Tech: The service is increasingly embracing technological innovation—including better communication systems and modernized water delivery—to reduce response times further.
  • Community Partnerships: The Chief vowed to reach out to every citizen, ensuring that the message of fire safety becomes a permanent fixture in Guyanese society.

“This year is indicative of the fact that the support given to us is being used to positively impact the members and citizens of this our dear country… we will continue to touch the lives of every citizen with the message of fire prevention.”Fire Chief Gregory Wickham

A New Era for the Fire Service?

While the 34% drop in calls is a significant statistical victory, the challenge remains in maintaining that momentum in a city of aging wooden heritage. As the GFS concludes its officers’ conference this week, the message is clear: while they are ready to fight fires with five tenders at a time, their ultimate goal is to ensure the fire never starts in the first place.
