GEORGETOWN, GUYANA — The 2020 Election Fraud Trial intensified on Wednesday, February 25, 2026, as the prosecution pushed forward with a voir dire (a trial within a trial) despite significant pushback from the defense. Acting Chief Magistrate Faith McGusty presided over Day 55 of the proceedings at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court, which saw six high-ranking police officers take the stand to provide evidence-in-chief.
The session was marked by sharp procedural arguments as Prosecutor Latchmie Rahamat accused the defense of utilizing “unfair” late-notice travel plans to stall the historic case.
Prosecution Moves to Overcome “Deliberate” Delays
With trial dates fixed since November 2025, the prosecution expressed frustration over the absence of lead defense attorney Eusi Anderson, who is currently out of the jurisdiction.
- No Requirement for Agreement: Prosecutor Rahamat argued that the state is entitled to present its case as it sees fit and is not required to wait for a specific defense attorney, especially since the defendants are represented by a multi-member legal team.
- Prejudice Denied: The state contended that the defendants would suffer no prejudice by having the evidence-in-chief presented now, as cross-examination has been preserved for Mr. Anderson’s return.
- Late Notice: Rahamat described the notice of Mr. Anderson’s absence—given only last Friday—as a disruption to the advance preparation of the state’s 73 witnesses.
Defense Secures Deferral for Cross-Examination
Defense attorney Ronald Daniels countered that the defense team had structured its representation specifically around Mr. Anderson’s role in cross-examining the police witnesses in the ongoing voir dire involving former GECOM employees Denise Babb-Cummings and Sheffern February.
While the Magistrate allowed the testimony to proceed, she ultimately ruled that the cross-examination will be deferred until Friday, February 27, 2026, upon Mr. Anderson’s expected return.
The Witnesses: Six Officers Take the Stand
The following members of the Guyana Police Force provided testimony regarding the post-election investigation into the alleged manipulation of the March 2020 results:
- Nigel Stephens: Inspector of Police, Criminal Investigation Department (CID).
- Komal Pitama: Assistant Superintendent of Police, Cove and John Police Station.
- Rodwell Sarabo: Detective Superintendent of Police, Brickdam Police Station.
- Hamlet DaSilva: Inspector of Police, Police Headquarters (Eve Leary) and Tactical Services Unit (TSU).
- Shane James: Detective Inspector, CID Headquarters.
- Sherwin Benjamin: Police Lance Corporal, CID Headquarters.
The Accused: A “Who’s Who” of 2020 Election Figures
The trial remains focused on 19 conspiracy charges involving some of the most prominent figures from the 2020 electoral cycle:
- Keith Lowenfield (Former CEO, GECOM)
- Roxanne Myers (Former DCEO, GECOM)
- Clairmont Mingo (Former Region 4 Returning Officer)
- Volda Lawrence (Former PNCR Chairperson)
- Carol Smith-Joseph (PNCR Activist)
- GECOM Staff: Sheffern February, Enrique Livan, Michelle Miller, and Denise Babb-Cummings.
Trial Outlook
The matter is scheduled to resume on Thursday, February 26, 2026. However, the most anticipated phase—the cross-examination of the six police witnesses by the defense—is now firmly set for Friday, February 27.
