AIM FOR EXCELLENCE IN ALL THAT YOU DO, A PLEA TO ALL WOMEN IN OBSERVANCE OF INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY – ACTING CHANCELLOR GEORGE

GEORGETOWN, GUYANA — In a prestigious nod to her decades of service, Acting Chancellor of the Judiciary, Madam Roxane George, has been prominently featured in a global mini-documentary produced by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). The recognition, timed for International Women’s Day (March 8, 2026), celebrates her “sterling contributions” to the legal fraternity and her role as a trailblazer for women in the Caribbean justice system.

Chancellor George’s journey to the pinnacle of Guyana’s judiciary serves as a masterclass in resilience and professional evolution.

A Career of Firsts: The Road to the Chancellery

Roxane George’s career spans over three decades of high-stakes legal work, beginning in the early 1990s:

  • 1990: Commenced her career as State Counsel at the Chambers of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
  • 1995: Elevated to the High Court as a Judge.
  • 2017: Appointed Acting Chief Justice, where she presided over several landmark constitutional cases.
  • 2025: Ascended to the highest judicial office in the land as Acting Chancellor of the Judiciary.

The “Gendered Perspective” in Justice

In her address shared via the UNDP documentary, Chancellor George highlighted that women now make up 60% of Guyana’s judicial officers. She argued that this majority is not just a statistic, but a transformative force for the law.

  • Focused Advocacy: She noted that women bring a “more gendered perspective” to the bench, enabling a deeper, more nuanced focus on Gender-Based Violence (GBV) and Family Matters—issues that disproportionately affect women and children.
  • Access to Justice: The Chancellor emphasized that seeing women in high-ranking positions like Solicitor General, Chief Justice, and Director of Public Prosecutions sends a “very strong message” that the legal system is accessible and representative of all citizens.
