Paramakatoi — The Government of Guyana has officially commissioned the Paramakatoi Airstrip, a major $800 million infrastructure investment aimed at improving access, reducing transportation costs, and accelerating economic development in hinterland communities within Region Eight.

The upgraded airstrip is expected to play a critical role in expanding tourism, supporting high-value agriculture, and stimulating economic activity in the Kato and Paramakatoi areas. Officials say the project will also help to significantly reduce the high cost of air travel to the hinterland while improving overall connectivity.

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, Minister of Public Works Juan Edghill described the project as a major milestone for the region. He noted that the airstrip measures 2,500 feet in length and 50 feet in width and was constructed using rigid concrete pavement to ensure durability. In addition, a 100-by-100-foot tarmac was built to facilitate aircraft parking and operations.

The minister emphasized that the airstrip provides 24/7 access and remains fully operational even during heavy rainfall. He explained that the project was approved in 2024 and successfully completed in 2025, despite challenging weather conditions. During the construction phase, more than 50 men and women were employed, creating jobs and developing skills for regional residents.

According to Edghill, the improved facility is expected to lower the cost of living by reducing transportation costs and enhancing the delivery of essential services, including healthcare, education, and social support. He added that the upgraded airstrip positions the community to better capitalize on tourism opportunities and economic growth.

Meanwhile, President Irfaan Ali said the Government is giving airlines and aviation operators time to adjust their rates following the commissioning of the airstrip, with the expectation that cost savings will be passed on to residents.

The Head of State stressed that public investments must translate into tangible benefits for citizens, particularly those living in the hinterland and remote communities. He also acknowledged calls for increased airlift and further strategic investments to reduce the cost of transporting people, goods, and services, noting that the Government’s focus is on ensuring that development benefits are widely shared.

The commissioning of the Paramakatoi Airstrip forms part of the Government’s broader push to strengthen hinterland infrastructure and promote inclusive national development.
