Education and infrastructural development are once again in the spotlight after activist Laura George issued a call for urgent attention to be given to the delays and incomplete school projects across several administrative regions.

George, in her appeal, noted that students and communities continue to face setbacks due to projects left unfinished, including secondary schools and dormitories in Regions 1, 7, 8, and 9. She emphasized that without decisive action, these delays will further widen the gap in access to quality education, particularly for children living in the hinterland.

The activist pointed to institutions such as Santa Rosa Secondary, Joala Secondary, Paramakatoi Secondary, and Miarinau Secondary, among others, stressing that the completion of these facilities must be prioritized if equitable opportunities in education are to be realized nationwide.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development recently convened a high-level meeting with regional executives, education officers, health officials, and engineers. At that engagement, Minister Priya Manickchand reaffirmed government’s commitment to bridging gaps between local governance structures and national priorities, promising that every region will benefit from stronger service delivery.

“There are a couple of things that we have to do as emergencies. What are projects that have not been completed? Why have they not been completed? How are we moving past the point we’re at right now to completion?”Minister Manickchand

Though no definitive timelines were announced, the minister insisted that the guiding principle remains that no community must be left behind in Guyana’s education drive.
