St. Kitts and Nevis Responds to Reported U.S. Travel Ban

The government of St. Kitts and Nevis states that it has not received any official notification from the United States regarding a potential travel ban affecting its nationals. This follows international media reports suggesting that the Trump-led U.S. administration may be considering visa restrictions against nationals from 36 countries, including four Caribbean nations.

In a statement issued Wednesday, the government emphasized that no communication has been received from any U.S. diplomatic channel, whether through its embassy or consular representatives.

“While we understand the concern such reports may generate, no formal notice has been issued or received that targets St. Kitts and Nevis or our citizens,” the government stated.

The Washington Post had previously reported that Antigua & Barbuda, Dominica, St. Lucia, and St. Kitts & Nevis were named in a leaked U.S. State Department memo signed by Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

OECS Chair Calls for Reevaluation of CARICOM Integration

Newly appointed OECS Chairman and Prime Minister of St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Dr. Ralph Gonsalves, has raised concerns about inefficiencies within the broader CARICOM bloc.

Speaking at an OECS gathering, Gonsalves said that “decoupling” from some aspects of CARICOM may be necessary to improve regional development outcomes. He stressed that the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) has achieved a deeper level of integration than CARICOM, especially in terms of policy and economic coordination.

“We must ensure cohesiveness as we move toward a desired regional outcome,” Gonsalves urged.

The comments come amid continued debate over the Caribbean Single Market and Economy (CSME) and its impact on smaller island economies.

Brazil’s Former President Bolsonaro Accused of Illegal Surveillance

In Brazil, Federal Police have formally accused former President Jair Bolsonaro, his son Carlos Bolsonaro, and others of participating in an illegal surveillance scheme using the country’s intelligence agency (ABIN).

Authorities allege that a criminal organization was established during Bolsonaro’s presidency to monitor public officials and disseminate disinformation via social media. A report submitted to the Supreme Court, currently under seal, outlines the use of state surveillance tools for political targeting.

Carlos Bolsonaro, a Rio city councillor, was indicted for using illegally obtained intelligence in online attacks against political opponents.

These developments come as Bolsonaro already faces charges related to a failed coup plot
