Guyana’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett, has expressed deep concern over the recent escalation of hostilities between Israel and Iran, describing the situation as a dangerous development that could further destabilize the Middle East and threaten global peace.

Speaking at a United Nations Security Council meeting on Monday, Rodrigues-Birkett condemned Israel’s recent preemptive air campaign on Iranian territory, which resulted in multiple casualties—including civilians—and triggered retaliatory drone and missile strikes by Iran.

“Israel’s latest attack on Iran contravenes the principles enshrined in the United Nations Charter,” she stated, warning that the strike could further inflame an already volatile situation in the region.

The envoy called on both nations to exercise maximum restraint, stressing that the world cannot afford further military escalation.

“Guyana reiterates its appeal to both Israel and Iran to avoid any further maneuvers that could plunge the Middle East into deeper turmoil—or worse, a nuclear catastrophe,” she cautioned.

Rodrigues-Birkett emphasized Guyana’s position that diplomacy, dialogue, and respect for international law must guide the resolution of the crisis. She urged both parties to uphold the principles of sovereignty, territorial integrity, and peaceful dispute resolution by UN Security Council resolutions and international legal standards.

The Security Council meeting followed a dramatic escalation of the conflict, which began on June 13, 2025, when Israel launched Operation Rising Lion, a coordinated airstrike involving over 200 warplanes and targeting more than 100 Iranian sites, including nuclear facilities and military installations.

In retaliation, Iran launched hundreds of ballistic missiles and drones toward Israeli cities, resulting in a four-day standoff that has so far claimed significant military and civilian lives on both sides.

Rodrigues-Birkett concluded her remarks by urging the Security Council to adopt a unified stance to prevent the outbreak of all-out war, warning that the consequences of inaction could be devastating—not only for the region but for the world.
