The Guyana National Bureau of Standards (GNBS) has announced an exciting lineup of activities to mark National Quality Week 2025, which will be observed from October 12th to 18th under a theme emphasizing collaboration in achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030.

According to Lloyd David, Head of Corporate Communications at the GNBS, this year’s observance holds special significance as it underscores the importance of partnerships and standardization in realizing global development goals.

“The International Organization for Standardization and other international bodies selected this theme because they believe that standardization plays a critical role in achieving all of the SDGs,” David explained.

The week of observances will open with official messages from Minister of Tourism, Industry and Commerce, Hon. Susan Rodrigues, Chair of the National Standards Council, and Executive Director of GNBS, Trevor Bascom.

As part of its outreach initiatives, the Bureau will host a speech competition for students in Region Two, aimed at helping young people understand how standards impact daily life, business operations, and consumer protection.

“At an early age, they can develop an appreciation for how standards help them function as both consumers and future entrepreneurs,” David noted.

Later in the week, the GNBS will host an international business session promoting the GYS 901 standard, which focuses on good management practices for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). The Bureau will also launch its “Like and Share” social media competition and the “We Are Standards” campaign, featuring local companies that have successfully used standards to improve efficiency, quality, and competitiveness.

The week will conclude with a Long Service Award Ceremony, where 19 GNBS employees will be recognized for their years of dedication and contribution to national standardization.

David also revealed that in November, the GNBS will host its National Quality Awards Ceremony, where more than 100 local businesses will be honoured for successfully implementing standards in their operations.

“Guyana is transforming, and it’s important that our products and services meet quality levels acceptable to our citizens,” David emphasized, reaffirming the Bureau’s commitment to building a culture of quality across all sectors.

He concluded by encouraging greater collaboration between GNBS and the private sector.

“We are eager to work with any business, organization, or entrepreneur that wants to develop and implement standards for the success of their enterprise,” he said.
